Hiking in the Gurktaler Alps — Berglodge with barrel sauna, meadow and mountain panorama

Hiking in the Gurktaler Alps

The best trails from the Berglodge Hochrindl

The Gurktaler Alps are Carinthia's best-kept hiking secret. Gently rounded Nock peaks, sweeping alpine meadows, traditional huts serving Brettljause and local dairy — and right in the middle of it all, the Berglodge Hochrindl at 1,630 m. Guests here start every trail directly from the front door. No drive to the trailhead, no parking stress, no uphill slog from the valley before the actual hiking day begins.

This guide covers the five best hikes from the lodge — from the leisurely Panorama Trail to the highest peak in the Nockberge. Plus insider tips on the best huts, the ideal season, and what really helps after a long day in the mountains.

Why the Gurktaler Alps are different from other hiking areas

The Gurktaler Alps — also known as the Nockberge — are a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This is not a marketing label but a genuine protection status that shields the region from mass tourism, mega lift systems, and the decline of alpine farming. You hike through a cultural landscape shaped for centuries by alpine dairy farming, sheep herding, and gentle tourism.

What makes it special: The Nock peaks are softly rounded, not sharply alpine. In practical terms: no need for technical climbing skills, no harness, no fear of exposed ridges. Even the highest peak in the region — the Eisenhut at 2,441 m — is reached via wide alpine paths. This makes the Gurktaler Alps one of Austria's most underrated family hiking destinations.

And: every trail starts from the Berglodge at 1,630 m. That means the first 800 vertical metres compared to valley start points are already done.

Trail 1 — Panorama Trail to the White Cross

approx. 3 hours easy Families

The flagship route for the first day. The Alpine Panorama Trail APW 156 leads in about 1.5 hours from the lodge area up to the White Cross at 1,810 m. There you'll find a seating area with sweeping views across the Nockberge — probably the most photogenic rest spot in the region.

Character: Wide, gently ascending paths, minimal technical difficulty, well signposted. Suitable for children from kindergarten age.

Highlights along the way: Anderle Cross, Pölling (1,776 m), expansive alpine meadows with grazing cattle in summer.

Insider Tip: Set off on a weekday morning — you'll have the trails almost to yourself. Those wanting more can continue from the White Cross towards the Lattersteig.

Trail 2 — Großer Speikkofel

approx. 5–6 hours moderate Experienced hikers

The Großer Speikkofel at 2,270 m is the ideal first "proper" Nock summit. You continue from the White Cross towards the Bretthöhe, then branch off to the Speikkofel. The name reveals what awaits: Speik — a rare mountain plant with an aromatic scent, once used in soap-making — grows here in dense cushions.

What you see from the top: 360-degree panorama across the Nockberge, reaching the Hohe Tauern to the west, down into the Gurktal valley, and on clear days as far as Lake Millstatt.

Insider Tip: Plan a stop at the Speikkofelhütte. The hut is small and rustic, and the Brettljause comes with cured meat and cheese from the region. Cash is often the only payment option — card doesn't always work.

Trail 3 — Eisenhut, the highest Nockberg

approx. 8–9 hours demanding Ambitious hikers

The Eisenhut at 2,441 m is the highest peak in the entire Nockberge — and the most rewarding day trip for hikers with stamina. From the White Cross, follow trail 156 upward, past the Spielriegel (2,176 m) to the Rapitzsattel (2,088 m), then continue on trail 129 across alpine meadows to the summit. From the White Cross, allow around 4 hours to the top.

What you see from the top: The Eisenhut even surpasses the Rosennock by one metre — you stand at the highest point in the region. In Föhn conditions you can see the Hohe Tauern, the Karawanken, and as far as Mount Triglav.

Insider Tip: Only attempt this summit in stable weather. At 2,441 m, conditions in the Nockberge can change rapidly — afternoon thunderstorms in summer are common. Early start (before 8 am), check the forecast the evening before, and always pack a rain jacket even when the sun is shining.

Trail 4 — Lattersteig–Speikkofel Circuit

If you want to experience the full beauty of the Gurktaler Alps in a single day, this is the route. Around 21 kilometres, roughly 1,000 m of elevation gain, across several summits — Lattersteig (2,264 m), Bretthöhe (2,320 m), Großer Speikkofel (2,270 m) — and back via St. Lorenzen to the Hochrindl.

Character: Long, varied mountain stage with multiple summit options, stunning alpine passages, and refreshment stops at the Hois-Hütte and Speikkofelhütte.

Insider Tip: Allow a full day with buffer time. Start no later than 7 am, carry water for at least four hours without a hut stop. Those wanting a shorter option can cut back to the lodge via the White Cross at any point — a key advantage of the loop route.

Hut culture — where the food is best

Hiking in the Gurktaler Alps without stopping at a mountain hut is like visiting Italy without espresso. Here are the three huts you'll pass on the routes above — and what to order:

Hois-Hütte

Classic alpine hut with a drinking fountain and rustic charm. Hearty home cooking — perfect after three hours of climbing.

Speikkofelhütte

Small and traditional, with Brettljause featuring local alpine beef specialities. Vegetarians will find fresh alpine cheese with farmhouse bread.

Stoichart-Hütte and Marktl-Hütte

Ideal for a short stroll on the arrival day — within easy walking distance of the Berglodge, relaxed and family-run.

Insider Tip: Mountain huts in the Nockberge typically close in mid-September. October hikers enjoy stunning golden-autumn days — but should bring their own food.

Hiking with children — why the Gurktaler Alps are ideal

The gently rounded Nock peaks place no high demands on sure-footedness or altitude tolerance. This makes the region one of Austria's best family hiking destinations.

Recommendations for families:

  • Panorama Trail to the White Cross — manageable from kindergarten age
  • Hochrindl circular walk — shorter loop directly at the ski area, ideal for half-day outings
  • Alpine strolls to Stoichart-Hütte or Marktl-Hütte — perfect first walk on arrival day

What makes the Berglodge the ideal family base: space for up to six guests, two bedrooms with two king-size beds and two single beds, a 590 m² private garden for playing and barbecuing — and in the evening, the private barrel sauna with panoramic window for the adults while the children are already asleep.

Best season for hiking in the Gurktaler Alps

June

Possible snow remnants at higher elevations, but the alpine flower season begins — gentian, alpine roses, Speik. Fewer hikers.

July and August

High season. All huts open, all routes accessible. Hottest weeks — early starts recommended.

September

The golden month. Clear weather, long visibility, fewer hikers, ideal temperatures. Our top booking recommendation.

October

First snowfall possible, many huts already closed. Still stunning for experienced hikers with their own provisions — the larches turn golden.

What to bring

For a classic day hike on one of the mid-level routes: ankle-high hiking boots, rain jacket (even in sunshine), two litres of water per person, packed lunch, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, power bank for your phone, small first-aid kit with blister plasters.

What you don't need: climbing harness, crampons, high-alpine equipment. The Nockberge are welcoming, not dangerous. Those wanting a high-alpine challenge can drive an hour to the Hohe Tauern — the Berglodge is a perfect base for that too.

After the hike: why the Berglodge is the perfect end to the day

You return after eight hours on the Eisenhut. Knees feel the descent, shoulders feel the pack. In that moment, the private barrel sauna with panoramic window at the Berglodge is the difference between a good and a perfect hiking day.

Add to that: ski-in/ski-out location (in summer: hike-in/hike-out), 590 m² private garden for barbecuing, two bedrooms for up to six guests, fully equipped kitchen for self-catering. And 20 minutes by car: the Therme Bad Kleinkirchheim spa for rainy days.
