Disc Golf Hochrindl — the course right next to the Berglodge

18-hole pro course, 12-hole beginner course, free training — right on your doorstep.

Disc golf is the sport of the decade — and one of the few sports where grandparents, parents and children can have fun at the same level. You throw frisbee discs at metal baskets, using as few throws as possible, through a natural landscape. Sounds simple? It is. But it quickly becomes addictive.

The best part: the Disc Golf Hochrindl course is directly adjacent to the Berglodge. No car, no commute — grab the discs from the garden shed after breakfast, short walk, off you go. In all of Carinthia there are only two official disc golf courses — the second is on the Petzn, two hours away.

What disc golf actually is — briefly explained

Imagine golf, but instead of clubs and a ball you use different frisbee discs and throw them at metal baskets. Three disc types, similar to golf:

  • Driver for long throws from the tee — fast and far
  • Midrange for medium distances — precise and stable
  • Putter for the final throw into the basket — slow and controlled

Insider tip: If you've never played disc golf before, don't start with the 18-hole pro course. Play a round on the 12-hole beginner course or warm up on the 8-basket putting course first. Otherwise you'll give up frustrated after hole 4.

Three courses at Hochrindl — one for every level

12-hole beginner course (holes A–L)

Short tee positions, manageable distances, ideal for beginners. Families with children from about age 8 do great here. A round takes around 1.5 to 2 hours with breaks.

12-hole advanced layout

Same holes as the beginner course, but from the long tee positions. More throwing distance required, technically more demanding.

18-hole pro course (holes 1–18)

The full round, with all technical challenges — trees, terrain edges, difficult basket positions. Plan three to four hours depending on pace. This is also where the UNION Disc Golf Club Hochrindl holds its tournaments.

Putting course with 8 baskets

Perfect for warming up or a quick game in between. Also ideal when the kids aren't ready for a full round yet.

Good to know: As a Berglodge guest, disc golf discs are available for you to use — free of charge, anytime, no registration needed.

Free beginner training — the real insider tip

The UNION Disc Golf Club Hochrindl offers free beginner training with club coaches in summer. You get a brief introduction to the three disc types, learn the basic throws (backhand, forehand, hyzer) and then play the first holes with an experienced player. For beginners this is invaluable — three hours with a pro is priceless in any other sport.

Disc golf for families — what you should know

The great thing about disc golf: it works from primary school age. An 8-year-old can play on the beginner course if the adults are patient and don't count every throw. Tip: play a family variant — play each hole until the disc is in the basket, without counting throws. This removes the competitive pressure and everyone has fun.

Why the Berglodge is the ideal disc golf base

You wake up at 1,630m, have breakfast with a view of the Nockberge, grab the discs from the garden shed and walk to the course. After the round: sauna, dinner in the large garden, then a beer on the terrace watching the sun set behind the Eisenhut. No car, no commute, no stress.

Plus: the Bad Kleinkirchheim thermal spa is 20 minutes away by car — perfect Plan B for bad weather. More summer activities in our Summer Guide with 12 activities.
